Get an up-close view of Lock 3 on the viewing platform and learn about current canal operations. If the day’s shipping schedule is in our favour, we may get to watch a ship pass through the lock!

Ontario Power Generation - Niagara Facilities - Virtual Tour and Technical Presentation

GeoNiagara 2021 is pleased to bring you a virtual tour of OPG's Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Generating Station complex that will include a historical look at hydroelectric power development in the Niagara Region through to the most recent Niagara Tunnel Project development and refurbishment of the Sir Adam Beck Pump Generating Station (PGS) Reservoir. The virtual tour will showcase a wide range of elements from the original developments through to current performance monitoring. Video footage will be used to transfer you virtually to the key facilities in the hydroelectric system complex led by members of OPG's technical team.

A highlight of this virtual tour will be a discussion on the design and construction of the remediation project for PGS Reservoir that occurred in 2016. The tour will be presented from a variety of perspectives, including OPG as owner, Golder as designer, ACT as grouting specialist contractor, and members of the independent expert review panel. This will highlight the geological history of the Niagara Region, factors of which had a major influence on the design of the remediation project. The presentations and video will be followed by a Q&A session with members from all the stakeholders and the expert panel that have dedicated a significant part of their careers to the challenges of hydropower development in the Niagara Region and beyond. 

Hydrogeological Tour of the Niagara Escarpment

See the Niagara Escarpment like you've never seen it before, through the eyes of a hydrogeologist.  This bus tour will start at the upper Niagara River, and travel past the Falls through the spectacular Gorge, stopping at the famous Thompson’s Point. The tour will continue to St. Davids where the Gorge and downstream end of the Whirlpool will be viewed along with the St. Davids Landfill and various former water supply recharge ponds. We will get a chance to visit the Fonthill Kame complex and for the geomorphologists, the tour will continue to Ball's Falls where the escarpment itself is laid bare.  Before returning, we will get a chance to venture off the path a bit and visit a one of Niagara’s best local wineries.
