Welcome to GeoNiagara 2021, the 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference and 14th Joint CGS/IAH-CNC Groundwater Conference. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the Southern Ontario Section of the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS-SOS), and the Canadian National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH-CNC) are honoured to host this year’s conference featuring the theme Creating a Sustainable and Smart Future.

Global pandemic, global warming, shortage of resources and growing inequality are indicators from all quarters of the world that we cannot maintain our quality of life as human societies and protect diversity of life on this planet without sustainable living and development.  Machine learning and resilient design are just tools to consider in achieving sustainable development.  We, as different members of the geoscience community, are fundamental in achieving this goal.  Niagara Falls region, with its abundance of renewable hydroelectric energy and historical coexistence of urban and agricultural living, is the symbol and hope for a sustainable future.

The conference will feature many opportunities for networking, connecting with, and learning from colleagues and distinguished speakers. The conference will open on Sunday evening with an Icebreaker and Exhibitor Reception, the CGS/IAH-CNC Awards Banquet on Monday, and Local Colour Night on Tuesday.

GeoNiagara 2021 will no doubt be a great conference for sharing knowledge on a wide range of geotechnical and hydrogeological topics, as well as experiencing all that Niagara Falls has to offer. Thank you for your participation – I hope you find the 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference and 14th Joint CGS/IAH-CNC Groundwater Conference to be both enjoyable and memorable.  I am looking forward to seeing you at the conference.
